Thoughts on Generative AI

ChatGPT was launched in November 2022 by OpenAI, surpassing 100 million active users in approximately 2 months time, 7 months quicker than TikTok and over 2 years faster than Instagram1. ChatGPT is a chatbot which is designed to converse with the individual by answering questions posed. The underlying machinery that ChatGPT is built on is what is known as a large language model (LLM) – and in this case specifically a transformer model2. Since its inception and successful user base, the AI boom has accelerated as attested to by the plethora of companies becoming involved in the Generative AI space. Commercial software legends such as Microsoft, Google and Meta have become prominent figures in this space – developing their own models for a variety of applications. At the time of this writing, I am both personally excited about the technology which is coming to life but also cognizant of the implications it may pose from an ethical perspective.
